Martine Smith is Professor in Clinical Speech and Language Studies at the University of Dublin, Trinity College Ireland. Her professional background is as a Speech and Language Therapist and her research and teaching focuses on communication impairment and severe disability. She has been involved in the field of Augmentative and Alternative Communication since the late 1980s. Her research focuses particularly on language development and aided communication, as well as the relationship between literacy and severe speech impairment and she has published extensively on these topics. She has served as President of the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication and is a former Associate Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the Augmentative and Alternative Communication journal.
